The stick figure with the top hat, magic wand and deck of cards means that people seeing what they expect to see is how magic tricks work, right?

    • The appears to be the case. I can perform a few card tricks, and I’ve had members of an audience discuss a trick after I’ve performed it and recap events completely incorrectly missing out key details or getting the order wrong. Quite often a vocal (and incorrect) member of the group eventually persuades the others about what happened. It makes me look like some sort of sorcerer and helps the next magician who performs for them so I don’t correct them ;)

    • Also, attentional focus, or misdirection — keeping you from noticing things that actually are visible, if only you were actually looking in the right place. You’ve probably seen the “count the passes” basketball video.

Or here’s another concept relevant to the comic, presented in the form of a card trick.

I saw the black hat and stick body, and immediately thought of the jerkass from xkcd.
