    …Surely you have nicer things to say about prison than that! I mean, “you can vary the severity of a sentence”? How exactly does that not apply to the older punishments?

    • In my opinion, it’s kind of a silly distinction, but it’s easier to put a number on something arbitrarily than it is to apply certain types of injury to certain parts of the body in certain degrees or specific forms of public humiliation.
