Programs range from group therapy to boot camps, from 1-hour videos on the risks of marijuana to inpatient addiction treatment and lifestyle re-education that can last for YEARS.

Average Joe in a graduation cap and gown, holding a diploma that reads “opportunity” and lifting stacked blocks reading “$” and “job” above other blocks labeled “community” and “responsibility.”

Usually, the greater the State’s control over you, the more likely you’ll come out with the long-term behavior changes and the life skills needed for true rehabilitation.

But succeeding can be HARD, and many would rather just serve their time. Also, not every cause of crime can be “cured.”

So rehabilitation can’t be the ONLY purpose of punishment.

And it isn’t. There are several. (Some more “civilized” than others.) We’ll get to each of them in turn.
