So rehabilitation and deterrence may be “civilized” purposes of punishment, but their real-life applicability is limited, at best.
Still, there are at least three more purposes of punishment.
We may not like to talk about them, and at least one is so uncivilized that you’ll probably never hear it mentioned in court, but we’ll get to them next time in Part 5: “The Three ‘R’s”
