It's lawful, effective, and easy -- all they have to do is ask. You don't have to say yes. You're allowed to say no. The police don't have to tell you that you can refuse. So long as it's reasonable for the police to believe that you are someone who can give permission to look, and you know what you're doing when you give permission to come in or look around, and the police don't force or coerce you into giving permission, then the police are allowed to search. So long as they don't poke around somewhere else, they're not doing anything wrong.
