The more expertise we have with the matter, the more we are able to chunk together. A ten-digit phone number can be chunked into the area code, the prefix, and the last four, only taking up three instead of ten spaces. With practice, the entire phone number can be chunked into a single perception. Similarly, a beginning reader can only process one word at a time, an experienced reader can process whole phrases at a time, and expert readers can process large chunks of text at once.
