Your attention may even be turned wholly inward. It becomes very difficult to miss other details, such as what the threatening person looks like. Stress hurts memory as well -- stimuli may be coming in too fast to reflect on them and process them into long-term memory. Plus, the body pumps out cortisol, which impairs the brain's ability to form long-term memories. All of this happens suddenly.
