Trust is <strong>learned<\/strong> (and loyalty earned) from <strong>experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Specifically, from what we experience when we are <strong>vulnerable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>Chimps grooming.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>SIS (narrating)<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0Our cousins the chimps do this by \u201cgrooming\u201d (picking parasites off others\u2019 backs). They\u2019re vulnerable to attack when they expose their back and head to a potential rival&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>CHIMP 1<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0Hold still&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>CHIMP 2<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0But instead of taking <strong>advantage,<\/strong> she\u2019s taking <strong>care<\/strong> of me!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>SIS (narrating)<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0This trust-building exercise builds two-way relationships of <strong>reciprocal<\/strong> altruism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>[EDIT SUGGESTION: CHANGE \u201cTWO-WAY\u201d TO \u201cONE-ON-ONE\u201d]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>CHIMP 3<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0I scratch <strong>your<\/strong> back, you scratch <strong>mine!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>SIS (narrating)<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0Which is nice, but it\u2019s no basis for a system of government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>Chimp grooming Donald Trump.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>SIS (narrating)<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0Even though we share almost all our DNA with them, humans are <strong>not<\/strong> chimps. We don\u2019t bond by grooming each other&#8230; we don\u2019t have \u201calpha males\u201d (no, we really don\u2019t)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>CHIMP<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0Do hold <strong>still,<\/strong> Mister President!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>TRUMP<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0Tweetin\u2019 like an <strong>alpha!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>Examples of human society: Barn raising, big church service, large protest, downtown Manhattan skyline, Napoleonic-era army charging forward, United Nations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>SIS (narrating)<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0&#8230;and human society is <strong>not<\/strong> chimp society.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">We come together in communities we know practically as well as <strong>ourselves&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">&#8230;and with <strong>masses<\/strong> of people&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">&#8230;we haven\u2019t even <strong>met.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>Chimp barber cutting a human\u2019s hair.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>SIS (narrating)<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0To form these kinds of relationships, grooming just ain\u2019t gonna <strong>cut<\/strong> it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>CHIMP BARBER<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0Life\u2019s too short!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>SIS (narrating)<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0We have many more ways to experience vulnerability and reinforce our trust in each other.
