Sorry, Jen, but this is just the flip side of Myth #3.<\/p>\n
You were already\u00a0trying<\/strong> to commit the crime.<\/p>\n
Giving you the\u00a0means<\/strong> to do it simply confirmed your intent. It didn’t\u00a0create<\/strong> a desire you didn’t already have.<\/p>\n
One of law enforcement’s more important tools for rooting out assassins, terror cells, and other plots is the use of the\u00a0agent provocateur<\/strong><\/em>\u2014typically an undercover or informant who poses as a sympathizer or as a supplier, in order to identify threats and gather evidence.<\/p>\n
Despite the negative connotations associated with the term, merely\u00a0using<\/strong>\u00a0provocateurs<\/em> isn’t a problem.<\/p>\n
It only becomes a problem when the\u00a0provocateur<\/em> actually\u00a0entraps<\/strong> an innocent person\u2014which didn’t happen here.<\/p>\n
