Inventing God and Law: Yahweh Takes Over<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Title: Part B: Yahweh Takes Over<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Panel 1: A bearded young man in a striped tunic raises his hand in prayer at an open-air hilltop shrine. Semi-arid hills range off in the distance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">NARRATION:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">On hilltops from Sinai to Samaria, you started to find open-air shrines to Yahweh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The practice of <strong>divination<\/strong> at these shrines offered people a primitive form of justice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">INSET: A black stone with white stripes, and an identical white stone with black stripes. They are captioned \u201cBlack rock NO\u201d and \u201cWhite rock YES.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">NARRATION:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">And as we\u2019ve seen, if folks think you\u2019re giving them justice, they\u2019re also going to agree that you\u2019ve got some <strong>authority.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">-=-<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Panel 2: A map of the region around the Sinai Peninsula, including land that is now part of Egypt, northwestern Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. The land to the west of the Dead Sea is colored dull orange, and does not extend to the Mediterranean. An irregular shape directly to the north is shaded dull pink, and encompasses the Jordan River, the Sea of Galilee, and the little panhandle in the north of modern Israel and Jordan. To the north of the pink zone are the words \u201cBa\u2019al came from up there\u201d and an arrow pointing off the map to the north. The city of Samaria is marked with a black dot in the pink zone, and the city of Jerusalem is marked with a black dot in the orange zone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">NARRATION:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">As Yahweh grew in importance, he was <strong>adopted<\/strong> into the Semitic pantheon as one of the <strong>sons<\/strong> of El and Asherah. (Along with another storm\/war god, \u201cBa\u2019al,\u201d from up north.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Politically, the region north of Jerusalem coalesced into a kingdom called \u201cIsra-El,\u201d or \u201cEl prevails.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">INSET: An arrow leads from that last sentence to the pink zone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">VOICE FROM SAMARIA:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">It\u2019s \u201cIsra-<strong>EL<\/strong>,\u201d not \u201cIsra-Yahweh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">NARRATION:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The region to the south remained more loosely organized, but Jerusalem grew in importance as a <strong>cult center<\/strong> of the worship of Yahweh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">INSET: An arrow leads from that last sentence to the orange zone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">VOICE FROM JERUSALEM:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Yahweh may be a lesser god, but he\u2019s <strong>our<\/strong> lesser god!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">-=-<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Panel 3: Two male figures shiver into one with the sound effect MERGE!, as a figure of Asherah watches with one hand on her hip and raising one arm in reaction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">NARRATION:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Gradually, and at different rates in different places, Yahweh took on attributes associated with El\u2014to the point that Yahweh eventually <strong>replaced<\/strong> El as head of the pantheon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">YAHWEH AND EL (merging):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">We are one!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">NARRATION:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Which meant that <strong>Asherah<\/strong> was no longer El\u2019s wife. She was <strong>Yahweh\u2019s<\/strong> wife.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">ASHERAH:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Sometimes it feels like you\u2019re not the same man I married.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">-=-<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Panel 4: A copper-colored snake with ruby eyes is draped around a Y-shaped staff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">NARRATION:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">[Side note: Asherah was often represented by a stylized tree of wisdom\/life, frequently draped with a serpent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Snakes were a common symbol of birth, rebirth, and healing in the ancient world, from India to the Aegean.
