Sadly, it couldn\u2019t last.<\/p>\n

Soon, Yehudah was once again a small province in a big empire\u2014now the Neo-Babylonian Empire.<\/p>\n

Then Josiah\u2019s heirs wound up repeating<\/strong> the same mistake that Israel had made\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026allying with Egypt, rebelling against Babylon\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026twice.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Babylon responded in the civilized<\/strong> way.<\/p>\n

As usual, they marched off the elites.<\/p>\n

They executed all of the king\u2019s sons.<\/p>\n

And Jerusalem itself was razed to rubble\u2026 its temple utterly demolished.<\/strong><\/p>\n

(Most of Jerusalem\u2019s population had already fled, as refugees, to other provinces with other gods.)<\/p>\n

23 years after Josiah\u2019s death, his newly-centralized state had been reduced to an impoverished, sparsely-populated waste.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

SOLDIER 1:<\/p>\n

That was one<\/strong> way to prevent institutional decay, I guess.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

SOLDIER 2:<\/p>\n

At least we\u2019ll have no more trouble with these incorrigible Yahweh-worshippers\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026their god is dead.<\/strong><\/p>\n
