Fascinating.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">I believe you said they\u2019d also invented <strong>law?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">And you were going to explain how it was somehow <strong>sovereign?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">AVERAGE JOE:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Right!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Okay, so you know how, since the dawn of time, <strong>justice<\/strong> worked <strong>one<\/strong> case at a time?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">LADY JUSTICE:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">You criticizing my <strong>work ethic<\/strong>, son?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">-=-<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Panel 2: The men of an Iron-Age Semitic tribe have gathered by a tree. As a chief figure observes, two men stand in the center and point accusing fingers at each other while arguing to the chief. Many of the men gathered around are arguing among themselves, or at the two in the middle, or at the chief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">NARRATION:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Most disputes and offenses you and your kin would resolve informally, by <strong>yourselves<\/strong>. Formally, a tribe might convene an assembly, or a king might appoint a judge, to figure out the appropriate resolution for your <strong>specific<\/strong> matter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Kin, courts, and councils all acted according to <strong>custom,<\/strong> the values, norms, and principles of their culture. Outcomes were never prescribed beforehand by some strict written formula.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">-=-<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Panel 3: A sheet of paper containing what looks like a modern statute, written in an ancient language.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">NARRATION:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">But the scripture rules <strong>were<\/strong> a strict written formula!
