Programs range from group therapy to boot camps, from 1-hour videos on the risks of marijuana to inpatient addiction treatment and lifestyle re-education that can last for YEARS.<\/p>\n
Average Joe in a graduation cap and gown, holding a diploma that reads “opportunity” and lifting stacked blocks reading “$” and “job” above other blocks labeled “community” and “responsibility.”<\/em><\/p>\n
Usually, the greater the State’s control over you, the more likely you’ll come out with the long-term behavior changes and the life skills needed for true rehabilitation.<\/p>\n
But succeeding can be HARD, and many would rather just serve their time. Also, not every cause of crime can be “cured.”<\/p>\n

So rehabilitation can’t be the ONLY purpose of punishment.<\/p>\n
And it isn’t. There are several. (Some more “civilized” than others.) We’ll get to each of them in turn.<\/p>\n
